Frequently asked questions
Answers for parents and tutors: how booking works, what vetting involves, and how recordings keep everyone safe.
For parents
How do I find a tutor?
Search by subject and level (from primary and 11+ preparation through KS3 and GCSE to A-Level) and shortlist the tutors who fit. Every tutor shown to you has already completed our full vetting process.
How much does tutoring cost?
The hourly rate on a tutor's profile is the whole cost of an hour of their time, VAT included. You see it before you request anything, and nothing is added later.
When am I charged for a session?
Nothing is charged when you book. About 5days before the session we place a hold on your card for that session's cost, which reserves the amount without taking it, and we take the payment at midday, two days before the session. You can choose to pay earlier from your sessions page. If the tutor declines, or does not answer before the session, the hold is released in full and nothing is taken.
Can I cancel a session?
Yes. Cancel at least 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. With less than 24 hours' notice, a partial charge may apply. If the tutor cancels at any point, you are refunded in full.
How do sessions take place?
Every session runs online in our own video room, joined directly in the browser. There is nothing to download or install. Sessions never take place off the platform.
Does my child need their own account?
No. The parent is the account holder, and students use the service through their parent's account. You must be 18 or over and have parental responsibility for the child to open an account.
What do I need for the first session?
Just a device with a camera, a microphone and a modern browser, plus a reasonable internet connection. Your child joins from a link in your account at the appointed time.
For tutors
How much will I earn as a tutor?
Tutors on CTS set their own rate when they join, from £15 to £30 an hour, and it is guaranteed for every session they teach. Visit our tutor page for details of how to apply.
What vetting will I go through?
Every tutor completes an enhanced DBS check, identity and right-to-work verification, reference checks, and a safeguarding interview with our school staffing team, the same team that supplies staff to UK schools. No one teaches before they are cleared.
What happens if my DBS clearance lapses?
We track the expiry of every tutor's DBS clearance. If yours lapses, you are removed from the platform automatically and any pending sessions are cancelled. You can return once your clearance is renewed and verified by us.
Can I contact parents or students directly?
No. All contact goes through the platform, and personal contact details are never exchanged. Arranging sessions or contact off the platform is against our terms of service and can lead to removal.
Are my sessions recorded?
Yes, every session is recorded for safeguarding and dispute resolution. You see a recording notice before you join each session. Recordings are accessible to our safeguarding team and to the parent who booked the session, for their own child's sessions only. Tutors cannot view them, including of sessions they taught.
Safety and recordings
How are tutors vetted?
Every tutor holds an enhanced DBS check and passes identity and right-to-work verification, reference checks, and a safeguarding interview conducted by our school staffing team before they can teach. Clearances are re-checked on an ongoing basis. Read more on our safeguarding page.
Why are sessions recorded?
Recording protects children and supports fair dispute resolution: if a concern is ever raised, our safeguarding team can review exactly what happened. Both participants see a recording notice before joining, and parents consent to recording at registration.
Who can watch the recordings?
Our safeguarding team, and you — for your own child's sessions. You open a recording from your sessions page and the link is made at that moment, so it cannot be passed on. Tutors cannot access recordings, not even of sessions they taught, and no other family can see yours. How recordings are stored and protected is covered in our privacy notice.
How long are recordings kept?
Recordings are kept for two years and then deleted. A recording that relates to a safeguarding concern, a complaint or a legal claim is kept for as long as that matter requires. Our privacy notice sets that out in full.
Can tutors and parents exchange contact details?
No. Sessions and messaging stay on the platform, so every interaction happens within the protections we have built: vetted tutors, recorded sessions and monitored accounts.
How do I raise a safeguarding concern?
Email our safeguarding team at info@cts-edu.com. We treat every concern seriously, review the relevant recordings and records, and refer matters to the relevant authorities where appropriate.
